Ever wonder if you can do anything except slather butter on Irish Soda Bread? Wonder no more! Check out these three tasty takes on how to make the most out of this classic St. Patrick’s Day staple.

Irish Grilled Cheese

Serving 1 Sandwich

Ingredients:

  • 2 slices of Irish Soda bread (1/2 inch thick)
  • 3 thin slices of cheddar cheese
  • 4Tbl Kerrygold salted butter
  • 3 large eggs (beaten)

Get cooking:

  1. On medium heat, melt all the butter
  2. Construct the sandwich (bread, cheese, bread)
  3. Place the sandwich in the pan with the butter and flip over so that butter gets on both sides.
  4. Cook both sides on medium-low heat until cheese starts to melt (1 min each side)
  5. With a spoon gently pour 1/2 the beaten eggs onto the exposed side of the sandwich top.
  6. Flip and repeat egg procedure
  7. Cook until eggs are firm and cheese melted

Irish French Toast

Servings: 2

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg powder
  • 1tsp cinnamon powder
  • 1tbl vanilla extract3 Large eggs (beaten)
  • 1/2 cup maple syrup (4oz)
  • 1 Tbl Kerrygold salted butter (divide into 4 pieces)
  • 4 slices of Irish Soda Bread (1/2” wide or finger width)

Get cooking:

Liquid mix:

  • In a medium-size bowl, combine nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla extract, eggs, and maple syrup. Whisk until smooth, no lumps visible.

Yields: 1 cup liquid mix

Frying the toast:

  • In a nonstick pan melt 1 piece of butter on high heat while simultaneously soaking 1 piece of Irish soda bread in the liquid mix, on both sides. Make sure that the egg mix is whisked before soaking so that the spices don’t settle at the bottom of the bowl. Be gentle with the bread as it tends to be brittle.
  • Place the soaked Irish soda bread slice into the hot pan and cook until golden brown. Approximately 1min on each side at medium/ high heat. Use a spatula to flip without breaking the toast. Repeat this process for the remaining 3 slices.
  • Serve with warm maple syrup and Kerrygold butter.

Irish Charcuterie Board

Add sliced Irish Soda bread to your green themed Charcuterie board featuring Irish cheeses.

3 Easy Ways to Balance Your Blood Sugar

November is National Diabetes Month! There are a variety of lifestyle habits that can impact blood sugar levels, including nutrition.

It’s easy for blood sugar to become uncontrolled with a busy schedule and confusion around on-the-go options. Here are 3 easy ways that you can start this week to help balance out your blood sugar.

Pair with Protein

When choosing your meals and snacks, aim to pair a healthy carbohydrate source with a protein source. Often times diabetics are told to simply ‘cut carbs’ which creates a weird guilty feeling around carbohydrates. This food guilt ends up manifesting as an all-or-nothing approach when a person avoids carbs completely and then eventually binges on the kinds of carbohydrates that don’t have a lot of other nutritional benefits (i.e. doughnuts, candy, pizza, soda).

The truth is, those foods are totally fine to have on occasion. If healthy carbs are consumed in moderation paired with protein, then those binges will likely decrease. Our bodies require carbohydrates for many important processes so when we restrict them too much, our bodies send us physiological signals to GET SOME MORE, hence the binge. Instead of focusing on avoiding carbs, focus on pairing them with a protein source. Doing this will allow your body to feel more satisfied and your blood sugar to be more balanced as opposed to those highs and lows.

Pro Tip: Healthy carb snacks like fruit, greek yogurt, and whole grain crackers can be paired with proteins like nuts, nut butters, string cheese or a hard-boiled egg.

Size Matters

Portions of food are important for overall health but for diabetics, portions of carbohydrates are of prime importance when balancing blood sugar. To view this as a basic analogy, think of these carbs you are ingesting as people who want to get into a concert venue. The concert venue has a limited number of seats. If more people show up to the venue than there are seats to offer, these people might crowd the aisles, or damage the venue or wreak havoc elsewhere. All these extra people causing problems are like that double portion of pasta you just ate. TOO MANY CARBS in one sitting. Instead, give the venue a chance to clear out and get ready for the next event.

Pasta isn’t the enemy, it’s just important to consume a portion that isn’t going to be a carbohydrate overload. Consider 1 cup of cooked pasta per sitting. Obviously 1 cup of food is not adequate for an entire meal so it’s a great opportunity to pair with protein such as turkey meatballs or shrimp and round out your meal with a salad on the side or toss some steamed or roasted vegetables right into the pasta dish.

Pro Tip: Check out the back of packages for the nutrition facts label and find the line for carbohydrates. If you have more than one carb-containing food in your snack or meal, be sure to consider the serving size and add the carbohydrate grams accordingly. Snacks should contain 0-20 total grams of carbohydrate. Meals should typically contain less than 50 total grams of carbohydrate per meal. These levels may be too high or too low for some but it’s best to work with a registered dietitian nutritionist to figure out the best level for you.

Drink Up Buttercup

Believe it or not, drinking water is beneficial to balancing blood sugar. Pure H2O helps with dilution and aids kidneys in removing any excess blood sugar. Often times an urge to snack is actually a sign from the body that it is slightly dehydrated. When a carb-containing snack is chosen instead of water, it will cause blood sugar levels to rise. Try drinking a glass of water when the craving for a sweet snack strikes. Wait 20 minutes and the craving may pass. If instead the craving has turned to slight hunger, then aim for a balanced snack that contains a healthy carb paired with a protein source.

The recommended amount of water is not the same for everyone but 8 cups per day is a good aim to start with. Many people actually need more but get much less! Getting adequate water throughout the day can also help with the afternoon fatigue that often comes with dropping blood sugar levels. Try keeping a reusable water bottle on the desk or kitchen counter as a reminder to drink up. The ideal amount of water will be reflected in urine color that is close to clear or light lemonade. A person who is dehydrated may produce urine that is near the color of apple juice.

Pro Tip: Make water the first priority in the morning. After all, so many human cells, body parts and internal reactions need this pure fuel to be efficient! Water will help everything move more smoothly.

Why get the kids involved?

Knowing how to involve children in mealtimes is important- not only to avoid unwanted messy situations but also because it provides important life skill development.

You may not have had the best experience in the past with letting your child help with dinner. Perhaps you let 3-year old Luke crack an egg- only to create more work for yourself as you’re cleaning it off the floor- and his face. Knowing what ways to include a child according to their age group and abilities can help prevent these messy accidents while teaching valuable skills. Bonus: Research shows letting children help with meals may help to reduce picky eating!

5 Mess-Free Options to Get Started

Most children 2-3 years old and up are capable of the five options below. Start here and build on these skills as the child gets older and more capable:

  1. Herbs: Have the child help pick herbs off the stem and break them into smaller pieces. For example homemade guacamole – they can help with the cilantro!

  1. Lettuce: They can help dry the lettuce with paper towels and use their fingers to shred it for a salad.

  1. Potatoes/ Avocados: A young child can scoop the flesh of a cooked potato or avocado out of the skin. They can also mash it, but be careful with mashing. If your child is still developing their motor skills, the mashing may get aggressive. A large, deep bowl might help prevent potato pieces from escaping. It’s a great teaching moment to show the child how to hold a bowl while mashing so it doesn’t slip away!

  1. Stirring/Mixing: Children LOVE to stir things. They love to watch the ingredients get mixed together and feel like they have an important job when asked to stir things. For example, a pasta salad, pancake batter, or muffin mix. Just caution with letting young children stir things that may be tough or dry- if it’s too hard to stir, they will get frustrated and food may go flying.

  1. Lemons/Limes: Have them “roll” lemons and limes on the table or counter to release the juice for any recipes using lemon or lime juice. Their goal is to make it easier to get the juice out once the fruit is cut open. Let them decide when the lemon or lime is ready to juice- and then let them watch the juices escape when it’s cut it in half!

Ready to give it a try?

Pick one of the methods above to try first and a recipe that it would work with.

Instructional FAQ

Q. How do I shop?
A. Here are some general steps to help you use the App:

1. You must always select a “Home Store.”

2. After selecting your home store, click Place an Order (if you want to shop from Past Orders, click Past Orders and login.)

3. Confirm the name/location of the store where you wish to pick up your order.

4. Products are in the menu – click the menu button and you will see the 8 main product categories. Or use the search box.

5. Once you select one of the main categories you can scroll to see the selections or use the “filter” (looks like a funnel in the upper right corner) to further sort and filter your choices.

6. You can also choose the “scan” feature (looks like the barcode lines similar to the scan feature on ShopRite from Home) to scan product you have on hand.

7. Now, order product, add slicing preference, quantity and any notes (if needed).

8. Then, click Add to Cart

9. When finished, go to your Cart and select your pickup date/time. You can also review your order. Remember: actual prices in store may vary and sale prices effective Sunday through Saturday in accordance with our circulars.

10. Similar to ShopRite from Home, each day the store allots certain times for deli pickup. The App will prompt you to pick a new slot if that one is already taken.

More Village Innovation: Virtual Culinary Classes – All of the fun and flavor, none of the close contact!

In these unique times of isolation and social distancing, people are longing for opportunities to do something fun. Our Bin37 Culinary Studio at the ShopRite of Greater Morristown is usually full of people gathering together over their love of food and cooking, but with social distancing measures in place and classes postponed, it’s been weeks since we’ve been able to offer our unique culinary insight with the community.

Yesterday we ended that isolation streak and hosted our first-ever virtual Bin37 culinary event through Zoom. Participants signed up for the class online and had the option to purchase a box that included everything required to make a truly classic Italian dish along with a perfectly paired bottle of wine.

Thanks go to Craig Lutzca, Chef Danny, Jason Mongiovi, Vicki Plamantouras, and the Bin37 culinary team, as well as Brandon Pantano, Rob Moorhead, and the marketing team for bringing this to life and showing our communities that we will find ways to get through this together!

Here are some highlights from last night’s event:

Guests learned about this event through an email list and through social media. They were able to register directly through Zoom to reserve their spot.

Chef Danny, Jason, and their Bin37 team put together 79 boxes for our class participants. Everything was pre-portioned and ready to cook!

Pre-portioned Ingredients:

Customers were able to choose either contactless curbside pickup or delivery. For those who chose to pick up, they were greeted by our friendly staff who placed their box right in their truck!

Our 100 class participants were treated to multi-camera angles and insider tips throughout the 90 minute class where Chef Danny prepared two Italian Classics, Chicken Sorrentino and Cacio e Pepe. Some people chose to cook alongside Chef Danny while others just observed with a glass a wine waiting to cook later. The class was 100% interactive, and Chef Danny answered questions throughout the entire event.

Behind the Scenes:

Our guests all had a great time! So many of them shared their behind-the-scenes photos and finished products with us. We were so happy were able to connect with our customers over food, no matter how far apart we actually were.

Cooking Along with Us:

We look forward to hosting another cooking class soon! Check out the full class recording here: Dropbox Video
